Photovoltaics: solar energy resources and the possibility of their use

2016

Abstract In this paper possibilities and limits of use of solar energy (like the best efficiencies of PV cells, world records and ‘notable exceptions’) were shown. Also some new ideas and concepts in photovoltaics (like new photovoltaic power plants or energy storage) were presented. Additionally authors try to predict development of solar power industry.

Ion track template technology for fabrication of CdTe and CdO nanocrystals

2020

Abstract CdTe and CdO nanocrystals were synthesized by chemical deposition into a-SiO2/n-Si ion track template formed by 200 MeV Xe ion irradiation with the fluence of 108 ions/cm2. Depending on the temperature of the solution CdTe + CdO and single-phase CdO with a hexagonal crystal structure were obtained, respectively. The study of the current – voltage characteristics of the obtained structure with the single-phase CdO allows us to estimate the number of grain boundaries and the height of the potential barrier, as well as the n-type conductivity.

Radiation hardness studies of CdTe and for the SIXS particle detector on-board the BepiColombo spacecraft

2009

Abstract We report of the radiation hardness measurements that were performed in the developing work of a particle detector on-board ESA's forthcoming BepiColombo spacecraft. Two different high- Z semiconductor compounds, cadmium telluride (CdTe) and mercuric iodide (HgI 2 ), were irradiated with 22 MeV protons in four steps to attain the estimated total dose of 10 12 p / cm 2 for the mission time. The performance of the detectors was studied before and after every irradiation with radioactive 55 Fe source Mn K α 5.9 keV emission line. We studied the impact of the proton beam exposure on detector leakage current, energy resolution and charge collection efficiency (CCE). Also the reconstruct…

3-Phase grid-connected building integrated photovoltaic system with reactive power control capability

2020

Abstract Recently, a tendency in the growing of grid-connected building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems has been noticed in most countries. Hence, high penetration of PV power into the system network can be observed in many points in the network. This may cause severe problems on the distribution network due to the intermittent nature of PV systems. As a feasible solution, the reactive power capability of voltage source inverter in PV systems can be employed rather than approaching expensive grid infrastructures in the distribution network. The purpose of this study is to implement a 3-phase grid-connected (BIPV) system with reactive power control to regulate the system voltage and i…

An agent-based model to support the preliminary design and operation of heating and power grids with cogeneration units and photovoltaic panels in de…

2022

The increase in the energy demands of residential neighborhoods constitutes a huge challenge to be faced. A viable option lies in the insertion of both renewable energy production systems and cogeneration units within urban territories. On-site production allows for the satisfaction of the heating and electrical demands of end-users and favors the distribution of produced energy within the neighborhood, especially under the regulatory framework of energy communities. This paper proposes a tool to model heating and electricity networks integrated with cogeneration units and PV panels installed in urban areas. The tool accounts for the following possibilities: (i) energy flow management and p…

A procedure to calculate the I–V characteristics of thin-film photovoltaic modules using an explicit rational form

2015

Abstract Accurate models of the electrical behaviour of photovoltaic modules are effective tools for system design. One or two diode equivalent circuits have been widely used even though some mathematical difficulties were found dealing with implicit equations. In this paper, a new model based on a simple rational function, which does not contain any implicit exponential form, is presented. The model was conceived in order to be used with thin-film photovoltaic modules, whose current–voltage curves are characterised by very smooth shapes. The parameters of the model are evaluated by means of the derivatives of the issued characteristics in the short circuit and open circuit points at standa…

An accurate one-diode model suited to represent the current-voltage characteristics of crystalline and thin-film photovoltaic modules

2020

Abstract In this paper a new one-diode model, conceived in order to be used to represent the current-voltage curves of both crystalline and thin-film photovoltaic modules, is presented. The model parameters are calculated from the information contained in the datasheets issued by manufactures by means of simple iterative procedures that do not require the assumption of simplifying hypotheses. Some innovative relations describing the dependence of the parameters from the solar irradiance and cell temperature are adopted in order to permit the model to reliably simulate the electrical behaviour of photovoltaic devices operating in real conditions. The ability of the model to calculate the cur…

Plasmonic modes in molybdenum ultra-thin films suitable for hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film solar cells

2014

We have recently demonstrated that molybdenum ultra-thin films interposed between hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and SnO2:F transparent conductive oxide (TCO) in thin film solar cells show light trapping effects which enhance the solar cells performances. The effect of this improvement may be attributed to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes excited at the molybdenum interface by the solar radiation. In this paper we show direct evidence of such SPP modes in the case of the molybdenum/air interface by using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) technique, pioneered by Kretschmann, and we evaluate the dielectric constant of molybdenum at 660 nm. Influence of temperature on the synthesis of thiol-stabilized CdTe nanoparticles in aqueous solutions

2010

We have investigated the evolution of thiol-capped cadmium telluride nanocrystals prepared in aqueous solutions at low and room temperature followed by heating at 50–100 °C. The UV–visible absorption spectra, as well as transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic light scattering observations made it possible to reveal differences in size and structure originating from different heating temperatures. It was shown that minimization of the nucleation process temperature provided formation of larger nanoparticles than at higher temperatures.

Interaction between nitroxyl radicals and CdTe quantum dots: Determination of fluorescence-quenching mechanisms in aqueous solution

2019

Abstract The present work characterizes the optical properties of CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) after interaction with nitroxyl radicals based on steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy studies. QDs of different sizes were exposed to 2 different nitroxyl radicals, i.e., TEMPO and 4-amino-TEMPO radicals. A clear dependence of dynamic and static Stern-Volmer constants values, KD and KS, respectively, was observed as a function of the size of QDs used, with a change from a mostly static mechanism (for smaller QD sizes) to a dynamic mechanism predominating as the nanoparticles increase in size. All observed effects are dependent on both the concentration of the radical and the s…
